How to Fit Your Dog Harness

Once you have your harness the next challenge is to learn how to correctly fit it to your pooch. Here are some tips for fitting your dog harnesses.

How to Put on + Fit a Step-In Dog Harness

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to put one on your dog

  1. Unbuckle the harness and lay it on the ground. **The single loop on the chest strap should be at the back.**

  2. Get your dog to stand over the harness. You can do this by carrying them to the spot or letting them approach you on their own. Give much praise + many treats, if required!!

  3. Place one of your dog’s front paws in one of the loops and the other paw on the other loop.

  4. Snap the clip together on your dog’s back. **muchmore praise, many more treats [if needed]**

  5. Ensure the harness is correctly fitted:

  • The clip + leash loops should sit behind your dogs shoulder blades [which is nearly directly above the lower arm when in a standing position - Point 1 on the diagram if you follow this LINK].

  • The side rings should be behind their shoulders + and higher than their breast bone, so that the front of their shoulders are unrestricted.

  • The front body strap should stay in place when your dog is in a sitting position. If you need to adjust the chest strap, ensure the side rings are NOT moved into a position that is over your dog’s shoulders!

  • The girth body strap should not touch your dogs front legs or rub under their "armpits".

  • The chest strap [runs between the front body strap + the girth body strap] should not pull on either of the connecting straps. It should run

  • The straps should be snug [two fingers should fit between all straps + your dogs fur].

  • If the sliders are as tight as they go and the harness is not snug, it is too large.

The basiscs are very similar to the Step-In Harness.

  1. Get your dog to stand or sit in a stable position. Give much praise + many treats if required!!

  2. Open the side release buckle. Face your dog + place Back Strap over your dog's head and onto their back. The Chest Strap will sit across your dog's chest.

  3. Clip the Body Strap buckles together. **much more praise, many more treats [if needed]**

  4. Adjust the Body Strap + Chest to obtain a snug fit around the girth + chest. The side rings should not sit on your dog's shoulders.

  5. Ensure the harness is correctly fitted [refer to above image showing dog in harness]:

  • The Back Strap + leash loops should sit behind your dogs shoulder blades [which is nearly directly above the lower arm when in a standing position - Point 1 on the diagram if you follow this LINK].

  • The side rings should be behind their shoulders + and higher than their breast bone, so that the front of their shoulders are unrestricted.

  • The Chest Strap should stay in place when your dog is in a sitting position. If you need to adjust the chest strap, ensure the side rings are NOT moved into a position that is over your dog’s shoulders!

  • All straps should be snug [two fingers should fit between all straps + your dogs fur].
